White Star Line--& "Empress of Ireland"

White Star Line--& "Empress of Ireland"

Did the White Star have something to do with the Empress of Ireland? Read this:

Chicago Tribune, Saturday, May 30, 1914, p. 2, c. 3:

Rumor Afloat in Chicago Empress of India May Have Been Weakened by Reconstruction.

That the Empress of Ireland was built originally for the White Star line, which refused to accept it because it was not up to specifications, was one of the reports in circulation last night. Another was that the ship had been rebuilt and lengthened from the center, thus weakening it amidship.

Edwin F. Clipson of the Press club, who returned from Europe on the Empress last fall, declared he was told by one of th officers of the rejection of the ship by the White Star and of the reconstruction.

Another Chicagoan, who made the trip across the Atlantic on the Empress of Ireland six years ago said it was common tlak that the ship and its sister craft were too short and cumbersome to develop any great speed. He declared the Empress of India was taken out of service a little later and lengthened by inserting a section amidship. This, he asserted, may have weakened the "back" of the Empress of Ireland.

Of course the item mentions all this as rumors, but all of it is most intriguing . . . to say the least . . .

This just didn't ring true, so I nosed around a bit and found that the Empress of Ireland was built for Canadian Pacific in 1905 by the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. on the Clyde in Scotland. We know that White Star had an exclusive arrangement with Harland & Wolff that all of their ships would be built by H&W, and in exchange, H&W would not build ships for other companies in direct competition with White Star.

So, just chalk it up to rampant press speculation of the times.
All the best,
