Dishing out a slam on "Return to the Titanic-Live!"

Dishing out a slam on "Return to the Titanic-Live!"

Postby Richard A Krebes on Sat Apr 13, 2013 8:05 pm

As some of the older members here may recall, in October of 1987 a live TV broadcast originated from Paris, France, entitled "Return to the Titanic-Live!" Hosted by Telly Savalas, the show received slams from many people, including pro-salvage historians. Recently I slammed the show myself in the following blog post:

Why the "Who loots ya, baby?" zinger? Well, Savalas is famous for Theo Kojak, after all, so that parody seemed to fit the subject matter
. ;)
Seriously, my post I also contrast the special with the opening of the safe from the Andrea Doria.
Enjoy! :)

I watched both live, and only enjoyed one. And it starred a man who dove to a sunken ship the day after the disaster . . .
All the best,

Tim

Wow, I'd forgotten that about the Doria special, Tim.

It was an entirely different animal, that's for sure. I thought that the opening of the Doria safe was handed with tact, grace, and certainly historical reverence.
All the best,

Tim

Wasn't there speculation that the artifacts "in the safe" when it was opened during "Return to the Titanic-Live!" were actually other artifacts put in before? If so, talk about the beginnings of "reality TV"! :)
